Quick answer: +52 is Mexico. Every Mexican number has 10 digits after +52, mobile or landline, and the digits don't tell you which it is. There is no 0 to drop. Example:
+52 55 1234 5678.
How to dial Mexico
| Calling from | Dial |
|---|---|
| Any mobile phone | +52 + 10 digits |
| US or Canada landline | 011 52 + 10 digits |
| Spain or UK landline | 00 52 + 10 digits |
Mexico has no trunk prefix. Since August 2019, calls inside Mexico use all 10 digits, so the number you're given is the number you dial after +52. If an old number is written with 01, 044 or 045 in front, drop that prefix: 044 55 1234 5678 becomes +52 55 1234 5678.
Mobile and landline numbers
Mobiles are 10 digits and carry the area code of the city where the line was issued, the same as landlines there.
Landlines are a 2-digit area code plus 8 digits in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, or a 3-digit area code plus 7 digits elsewhere. Mexico City has two codes, 55 and 56.
| City | Area code in Mexico | From abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico City | 55 or 56 | +52 55 xxxx xxxx |
| Guadalajara | 33 | +52 33 xxxx xxxx |
| Monterrey | 81 | +52 81 xxxx xxxx |
| Puebla | 222 | +52 222 xxx xxxx |
| Tijuana | 664 | +52 664 xxx xxxx |
| León | 477 | +52 477 xxx xxxx |
| Cancún | 998 | +52 998 xxx xxxx |
| Mérida | 999 | +52 999 xxx xxxx |
Codes that get mixed up with +52
+53 is Cuba, +54 is Argentina and +51 is Peru.
Time difference
Most of Mexico, including Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, is on UTC-6 all year with no daylight saving time. Mexico has three other zones: Cancún and the rest of Quintana Roo stay on UTC-5 all year, Sonora, Sinaloa and Baja California Sur stay on UTC-7, and Tijuana and the rest of Baja California follow US Pacific time, clock changes included. A few border towns also change their clocks with the US.
| Where you are | Your clocks on summer time | Your clocks on standard time |
|---|---|---|
| US East Coast | Mexico City is 2h behind | Mexico City is 1h behind |
| US Central | Mexico City is 1h behind | Same time |
| US West Coast | Mexico City is 1h ahead | Mexico City is 2h ahead |
| Spain | Mexico City is 8h behind | Mexico City is 7h behind |
A 9 AM call from New York reaches Mexico City at 7 AM in the US summer and 8 AM in the US winter.

FAQ
Do I still need to dial 1 after +52 to reach a Mexican mobile?
No. Mexico dropped that rule, so mobiles and landlines are both dialed as +52 plus 10 digits. If an old contact is saved as +52 1 followed by 10 digits, delete the 1.
Can I call a Mexican 800 number from abroad?
Usually not. Mexican 800 numbers are toll-free for callers inside Mexico and often don't connect from other countries. Look for the company's regular 10-digit number instead.
