Calling the USA from Germany: What It Really Costs (2026)

"Anruf Deutschland USA Preis" is the single most-searched German question in our own search data, and the honest answer is: it depends less on the call than on which carrier contract you happen to hold. The same minute to the same American phone can cost you €1.12 or about three cents, depending purely on how the call is routed. Here are the numbers, and where each one comes from.

What the German Carriers Charge to Call the USA

All rates below are per minute from Germany, taken from the carriers' own published price lists and checked on 8 August 2026.

Vodafone's €1.12 deserves the attention. It applies to every standard-tariff customer who simply dials a +1 number without booking anything first — and a half-hour family call at that rate costs €33.60. Nothing about the call itself justifies that. American networks charge among the lowest termination fees in the world, which is exactly why an internet-calling app can complete the identical call for about three cents.

The Minutenpakete Small Print

Vodafone's answer to its own standard rate is the MinutenPaket: World 120 gives 120 minutes for €14.99 a month, World 600 gives 600 for €19.99. Three catches, all from the same price list:

• Most packages carry a 12-month minimum term. That €14.99 is really a €179.88 commitment, whether you call or not.
• Unused minutes vanish each month. Call for an hour, and your effective rate on World 120 was 12.5 cents a minute; call for 20 minutes and it was 75.
• The minutes count only for calls made from Germany. Book a package, fly to the US, and calls from there bill as roaming instead — a distinction Vodafone's own forum shows customers discovering on their bills.

The Cheapest Reliable Route

For calls to the USA specifically, the internet route is hard to argue with: US termination fees are among the lowest in the world, so a calling app completes the same call to any American landline or mobile for about 3 cents a minute with no package, no term, and no from-Germany restriction. A month of weekly half-hour calls comes to about €3.40 — against €134.40 at Vodafone's standard rate, or a €14.99 package you must keep for a year.

WhatsApp remains the right answer when both sides have it: app-to-app calls cost nothing. The calling app earns its keep for everyone WhatsApp can't reach — American landlines, offices, doctors, banks, and relatives whose phones stay stubbornly analogue.

Dialling Mechanics, for Completeness

From any German phone, dial +1 (or 001), then the 3-digit area code, then the 7-digit number: +1 212 555 0100. Drop nothing — US numbers have no leading zero to remove. If a number is written as (212) 555-0100, the brackets and hyphens are decoration.

If You Remember Call-by-Call, That Route Has Closed

For twenty years the standard German answer to an expensive international call was Call-by-Call: dial a five-digit prefix like 010 13 before the number and pay a competing provider's rate instead of your own. It was cheap, it needed no contract, and plenty of guides still recommend it.

It no longer exists. Providers withdrew the service at the end of December 2024, and since 1 January 2025 calls from a German landline simply run over your own provider's network at your own provider's rates. If you have not called the USA since then, the price you remember is not the price you will pay, and the trick you remember will not work.

What replaced it, for landline and mobile callers alike, is the internet: either a calling app that dials real numbers, or one of the callthrough services that still resell cheap minutes. The comparison in this article is between your carrier's current rate and an app, because those are the two options actually left.

The 1-800 Problem

One of the most common reasons Germans call the USA is not family at all. It is a bank, an airline, a software company, or a government office, and the number printed on the website starts with 1-800.

US toll-free numbers, the ones beginning 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 or 833, are only toll-free inside North America. Dialled from Germany they behave in one of two annoying ways: the call fails to connect at all, or it connects and is billed as an ordinary international call to the USA. On a Vodafone standard tariff that is €1.12 a minute to sit in a hold queue.

Skype used to be the workaround, because it connected to US toll-free numbers at no charge. Skype shut down in May 2025 and took that trick with it.

What works now is finding the organisation's direct-dial number. Almost every US institution with an 800 number also publishes a normal geographic +1 number for international callers, usually on a contact or "calling from outside the US" page. Search for the organisation's name together with "international callers" or "from outside the US". Federal agencies in particular are good at publishing one, because they have to serve Americans living abroad. Dial that number instead, from whichever route in the table above is cheapest for you, and you skip both the connection problem and the toll-free surcharge.

When to Call: the Time Difference Nobody Budgets For

A cheap per-minute rate is wasted if you reach an answering machine. Germany runs on CET in winter and CEST in summer, and the continental United States sits between six and nine hours behind:

The practical window is the German evening. From about 3pm to 9pm in Germany you catch the whole United States during its working day, and a call at 6pm German time reaches a New York office at noon and a Los Angeles office as it opens.

Twice a year the gaps shift for a couple of weeks, because the two continents change their clocks on different dates. The United States moves to summer time on the second Sunday in March while Europe waits until the last Sunday, and in autumn Europe returns to winter time at the end of October while the United States waits until the first Sunday in November. During those windows every figure in the table shrinks by an hour. It is a small thing that explains why a call that always worked at 3pm suddenly arrives an hour early.

When the Call Should Be Free

None of this matters if the person you are calling has a smartphone and a data connection. WhatsApp, FaceTime and Telegram calls between two apps cost nothing beyond the data they use, and no paid route competes with free. In practice that covers most family calls to younger relatives in the USA.
